Caracas FC sits atop Group H of the Copa Sudamericana with 13 points after six group-stage matches, clinching their knockout-round berth with a week to spare — the earliest the club has ever mathematically confirmed progression in South American club competition. The second leg of their group finale against Deportivo Táchira is set for July 9 at the Estadio Olímpico de la UCV, and the club is already selling out sections of the lower tier.
The timing matters. Venezuelan club football has spent the better part of a decade fighting the perception that the Liga Futve is a lightweight continental presence. Caracas FC's current run — seven games unbeaten across all competitions since April 19 — is the kind of form that silences that conversation, at least temporarily. The World Cup rolls into Mexico, the United States, and Canada in a matter of days, and regional attention to club football is fragmenting. That makes this domestic surge harder to achieve and, arguably, more meaningful.
Head coach Ricardo Páez has built something tactically coherent around a compact 4-3-3 that transitions quickly. The midfield trio — anchored by a single holding player and two box-to-box runners — has recorded the highest average pressing intensity in the Liga Futve this season according to Transfermarkt data updated through June 30, with the squad averaging 11.2 high turnovers per 90 minutes in league play. That number would rank comfortably inside the top five in the Argentine Primera División, for context.
Locally, the mood around Bello Monte — the neighbourhood where the club's training complex sits just off Avenida Principal de Las Mercedes — has shifted. The club store on the ground floor of the Centro Comercial El Recreo in Sabana Grande has reportedly moved more than 1,400 replica jerseys since June 1, according to club commercial figures released this week. The No. 10 shirt, worn by attacking midfielder Jhon Murillo, is the top seller at Bs. 180 per unit.
In the Liga Futve, Caracas FC hold a five-point lead over Deportivo La Guaira going into matchday 22, scheduled for July 12. A win there — away at the Estadio Brigido Iriarte in El Paraíso — would extend that cushion and essentially hand them the Clausura title with three rounds remaining. La Guaira have injury concerns at fullback after their 1-1 draw with Estudiantes de Mérida on July 1, which makes the fixture look increasingly favorable for the Rojos del Ávila.
On the continental side, the Copa Sudamericana round of 16 draw takes place in Luque, Paraguay on July 17. Possible opponents include Independiente of Argentina and San Lorenzo, both of whom have travelled to Caracas in recent editions of CONMEBOL competitions and know the altitude at Estadio Olímpico de la UCV — sitting at roughly 900 metres — does not punish visitors the way Bogotá or Quito would. That removes one traditional home advantage. Páez's staff is aware of it; the club has reportedly been analyzing opposition pressing structures for the past three weeks.
Supporters planning to attend the Táchira second leg on July 9 should note that the Asociación Civil Caracas FC opened its official ticket window at the Estadio Olímpico de la UCV box office on July 3. Seated tribune passes were listed at Bs. 95, with the popular north end standing section at Bs. 55. Given that the last three home Copa matches sold beyond 80 percent capacity, purchasing before July 7 is advisable. The club has also confirmed a fan zone on Avenida Universidad from 5 p.m. with screens broadcasting pre-match coverage — doors to the stadium open at 6 p.m. for an 8 p.m. kickoff.
