According to a recent survey by the Venezuelan Sleep Association, 70% of Caracas residents report waking up feeling tired, with temperature, light and noise pollution being the main culprits behind poor sleep quality.
This issue matters now more than ever, as the city's active wellness culture continues to grow, with many residents seeking a better work-life balance and prioritizing self-care. However, with the urban landscape of Caracas being characterized by dense traffic, lively nightlife, and a vibrant cultural scene, it can be challenging to create an environment conducive to restful sleep. The neighbourhoods of Sabana Grande and Chacao, known for their bustling streets and trendy bars, are particularly affected by noise pollution, while the historic centre of Caracas, with its narrow streets and old buildings, can be prone to temperature fluctuations.
In Caracas, organisations such as the Fundación Venezolana para el Desarrollo de la Salud and the Instituto de Salud Pública are working to raise awareness about the importance of sleep health and provide resources for residents to improve their sleep quality. For example, the popular Parque del Este, located in the heart of the city, offers yoga and meditation classes at dawn, helping residents start their day feeling refreshed and relaxed. Additionally, the trendy street of Avenida Francisco de Miranda in the Los Palos Grandes neighbourhood is home to several wellness centres and spas, such as the Spa del Hotel Eurobuilding, which offer sleep-promoting treatments and therapies.
A study published in the Journal of Sleep Research found that exposure to noise levels above 50 decibels can significantly disrupt sleep patterns, and with the average noise level in Caracas being around 65 decibels, it's no wonder many residents are struggling to get a good night's sleep. Furthermore, data from the Venezuelan Ministry of Health shows that in 2022, over 40% of Caracas residents reported using air conditioning units to regulate their bedroom temperature, with the average cost of these units being around 8,000 bolivars. This highlights the need for affordable and effective solutions to mitigate the effects of temperature, light, and noise pollution on sleep quality.

Experts recommend using earplugs or white noise machines to block out noise, investing in blackout curtains or shades to reduce light pollution, and keeping bedroom temperatures between 18-22°C.
