Caracas markets recorded a 22 percent rise in sales of dried beans and eggs during the first half of 2026 compared with the same period last year.
Meat prices at many Caracas butchers climbed above 18 USD per kilogram in June, prompting shoppers to seek cheaper complete-protein options that still support muscle maintenance and daily energy. The trend aligns with broader city efforts to promote balanced plates through neighborhood nutrition talks and school meal updates that now list plant proteins alongside traditional Venezuelan staples.
Vendors at the Mercado de Chacao on Avenida Principal report steady lines for caraotas negras and queso de mano by 7 a.m. each weekday. A short drive away, the health-food kiosk inside Centro Comercial El Recreo on Avenida Libertador stocks imported lentils and powdered egg whites that sell out before noon on Saturdays. Both sites host weekly produce stands tied to the city’s municipal nutrition program that began in March 2025.
Black beans deliver 15 grams of protein per cooked cup and cost roughly 2.10 USD per kilogram at Quinta Crespo stalls as of early July. A dozen large eggs from farms in nearby Aragua state sell for 3.80 USD at the same stands. Full-fat yogurt from the local Lácteos Los Andes plant provides 10 grams of protein per 200-gram serving and remains available at under 1.50 USD in most Chacao refrigerators.
Nutrition data from the Instituto Nacional de Nutrición’s 2025 household survey showed that households eating beans or eggs at least four times weekly reported 18 percent lower rates of reported fatigue than those relying mainly on meat. The same report noted average household spending on protein fell by 9 USD per month when shoppers mixed in lentils and local cheese.
Start the week by soaking a kilogram of black beans overnight, then cook them with garlic and onion for use in arepas or rice bowls. Boil a dozen eggs on Sunday and keep them ready for quick additions to salads or soups. Pair either option with a glass of local yogurt and a handful of roasted peanuts from the Las Mercedes stands to reach 25 grams of protein in one sitting. Residents can check stock and prices at the two markets before heading out, since both update daily boards by 6:30 a.m.
